This photo was taken in Favorite Channel near Juneau, Alaska, while on a whale-watching expedition (2015). The island in the background – Shelter Island – is locally known for having a significant number of bear per square mile.

Set adrift with no hope; for the water is teeming with leviathan, nudging their calves through the art of the hunt and thick, grizzled bruins gnash their teeth just beyond the timberline.

What a gorgeous picture! I even felt chills when I imagined splashing into the water. The little house in the background looks like a pretty opening scene in a movie. And are those otters? I didn’t notice them at first, but your writing caught my attention. They’re very cute. 🙂

They’re sea lions, actually. Big, boisterous sea lions. The buoy they’re on is about the size of a small SUV (think RAV4 or Escape), turned on its nose; it’s not exactly petite! The weather was quite pleasant as it was July; however, being out on the water, there was a steady breeze. Plus, Mendenthal Glacier was nearby, keeping the surrounding area temperate.
This was my first trip to Alaska; hopefully it won’t be my last! 💖

Wow, that’s a huge buoy, haha! I remember seeing sea lions at Pier 39 in San Francisco, back in August; they’re quite funny and, as you said, boisterous. ❤ I hope you find yourself back in Alaska. Seems like such an adventure (the whole world is an adventure)!

There are 4 on there if you look closely. They were all vying for safe harbor. Of course, there were several buoys too… Alaska is gorgeous!
